Updated 27 January 2026
In 2025 the Queensland Government released a targeted consultation paper on expanding mandatory teacher registration to require all early childhood teachers (ECTs) employed in approved centre-based services as the ECT under the National Quality Framework in Queensland to be registered.
The proposed model aims to elevate the professional identity of ECTs with a qualification approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
This includes enabling the registration of three and four-year qualified ECTs (including qualifications with a birth to five years focus) to recognise the importance of early childhood learning and development as a specialist area of teaching and advance child safety.
Consultation closed on Monday 5 January 2026.
